October is an exciting month, not just because of Halloween but because it’s National Orthodontic Health Month (NOHM)! This observance celebrates healthy, beautiful smiles and the life-changing benefits of orthodontic treatment. It also highlights the importance of good oral health, especially for our patients.
Additionally, October is National Bullying Prevention Month, and we join the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO), which works throughout the month to raise awareness about bullying. Together, we can help promote kindness, respect, and inclusion as part of the solution to this serious issue.
If you are currently in braces or aligners, here are a few essential tips to protect your orthodontic appliances during this treat-filled season:
Skip the sticky, chewy treats:
We know how tempting Halloween candy can be, but it's crucial to avoid hard, sticky, crunchy, or chewy snacks.Things such as caramel, gummies, licorice, sugared gum, and jelly beans can cause damage to your braces or aligners. By avoiding these items, you can protect your progress and indulge in your favorite treats even sooner!
Say no to hard treats:
Nuts, nut-filled snacks, chips, and popcorn can cause damage to brackets, bands, and wires. Keeping these out of your Halloween stash will help ensure your treatment stays on track.
Brush after indulging:
With all the sweets and treats around, brushing and flossing are more important than ever. After eating sugary or starchy foods, make sure to brush and floss thoroughly to prevent cavities and keep your smile in top shape!
Wishing you a fun and smile-friendly October!
