Dental Sealants
What Are Pediatric Dental Sealants?
Pediatric dental sealants are a simple and effective way to protect your child’s teeth from cavities. These sealants are a thin coating, either white or clear, that is carefully applied to the tops and sides of your child's back teeth—primarily the molars. This process helps prevent early-stage decay from developing into full-blown cavities. Dental sealants are made from the same materials used in white fillings and create a hard, protective shield over the tooth's surface.
Applying sealants is a quick and painless process. The dentist uses a small brush to apply the liquid sealant to the grooves of your child’s teeth, where it is then hardened using a special blue LED light. No anesthesia is required, as it is not an uncomfortable procedure. Once in place, the sealant provides a strong barrier that helps keep out food particles and plaque, which can otherwise settle into the deep crevices of molars and cause decay.
Sealants are especially effective for children around six years old, right after their permanent molars start coming in. According to the American Dental Association (ADA), dental sealants are highly effective in preventing cavities on the chewing surfaces of molars, and they can even stop the progression of early decay in some cases.
By applying sealants early, you’re giving your child’s teeth an extra layer of protection and helping to prevent the need for more invasive dental procedures in the future. The ADA strongly recommends sealants as a preventive measure for children and adolescents to maintain healthy teeth and minimize the risk of cavities.

Seal Out Decay
A sealant is a protective coating applied to the chewing surfaces (grooves) of the back teeth (premolars and molars), where four out of five cavities in children are found. This sealant acts as a barrier to food, plaque, and acid, thus protecting the decay-prone areas of the teeth.
